Barbarians Take Two From Harlequins |
August 30, 2008, By Ken Matthews
Denver Barbarians beat Denver Harlequins 68-8 Saturday, at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Barbarians scored early and often, using abundant possession provided by their dominate forward pack. The Barbarian backs attacked with pace and eliminated any chance of a Harlequin victory early. The Barbarians scored 10 tries and, after missing the first conversion, converted the remaining tries.
A side Match
The first Barbarian try came at 5 minutes. #8 Adam Drury attacked from the base of the scrum inside the Harlequin half. #7 Garrett Peterson supported his attack and took a pass at pace that took Peterson to the goal line. The Harlequins infringed at the ruck and the Barbarians elected a scrum just to the right of the posts. Again, Drury picked up and attacked right. Barbarian rookie #9 Ian Todd from University of Colorado supported Drury’s run, took the pass and spun the ball wide to wing Asham Bell who motored to the corner for the try. Flyhalf Dan Bludeau’s conversion failed. Barbarians 5, Harlequins 0.
At 12 minutes, following a build up from inside the Harlequin half, inside center Michael Hughes crashed in under the posts. Bludeau converted. Barbarians 12, Harlequins 0.
Outside center Ben Haapapuro finished off the next Barbarian attack, after a series of rucks brought the ball inside 5 meters, where Haapapuro sliced in for the try. Bludeau’s conversion was good. At 16 minutes, Barbarians 19, Harlequins 0.
#7 Garrett Peterson, whose hard running through the match created pressure and line breaks, touched down the next try at 23 minutes. From a 15 meter scrum in center field, #8 Drury picked up and ran strong side, beating the Harlequin flanker. Peterson ran inside support, Drury offloaded, and Peterson jammed in the try. Bludeau’s conversion was good. Barbarians 26, Harlequins 0.
The Harlequins converted a 22 meter penalty kick at 28 minutes. Barbarians 26, Harlequins 3.
From a penalty kick deep in their half, the Harlequins kicked deep to the left touch line. Haapapuro tapped back infield at the Barbarian 10 meter line attempting to avoid a lineout to the Harlequins and negate the penalty. Unfortunately for the Barbarians, the Harlequin wing was hustling down the touchline, intercepted the tap back and sprinted the distance for a try. The conversion failed. At 32 minutes, Barbarians 26, Harlequins 8.
The Barbarians kicked off and immediately pressured the Harlequins into an error. From the ensuing scrum at the Harlequin 22 meter line, Drury picked again and ran right. A series of rucks advance the ball near the goal line and #1 Andy Post crashed through for a try. Hughes converted. At halftime, Barbarians 33, Harlequins 8.
The second half was all Barbarians. From a 22 meter Barbarian scrum, Peterson now at #8 picked up, broke a tackle and crashed in for the try. Hughes converted. At 45 minutes, Barbarians 40, Harlequins 8.
The Barbarians’ next try came at 52 minutes. From deep inside the Barbarians half, Harlequin possession is turned over and counterattacked. Multiple hands transferred the ball to #6 Rob Moreno, who cut through a gap and made a 40 meter run. Flyhalf Dan Bludeau supported on the inside and took the pass at the Harlequin 10 meter line. Bludeau swerved around the Harlequin fullback and took it the distance. Hughes converted. Barbarians 47, Harlequins 8.
The Barbarians took the kick-off and kick to touch deep in the Harlequin half. The Harlequins won their line out but a short clearance kick was counterattacked by the Barbos. Several phases again found #1 Post on a crash off the final ruck. Hughes’ conversion was good. Barbarians 54, Harlequins 8.
Prop Mike Kelley scored the next try. From the kick off following the preceding try, Peterson fields the kick and counterattacks to midfield where he offloads to the Barbo backline, who advance to ruck at the Harlequin 22. The backs win the ruck and the ball is shipped left back to the forwards, who are filling out the backline. The ball is passed through the hands to Kelley who is on the left wing, 20 meters out. Kelley sprints to 5 meters from the line where the cover defense catches him. Kelley cuts back fending off the defender, staying in bounds and bulls his way in for the try. Hughes’ conversion from wide is good. Barbarians 61, Harlequins 8, at 75 minutes.
Flyhalf Bludeau scored the final try. From a ruck set by #13 Haapapuro after an long centering run, the scrum half passes to Bludeau, who passes to #12 Hughes and loops Hughes. Bludeau takes the pass, dummies wide, and slices through the gap for the try. Hughes’ conversion is good. Final score Barbarians 68, Harlequins 8.

Barbarians Hammer Fort Collins in Season Opener |
|
August 24, 2008, by Ken Matthews
Denver Barbarians defeated Fort Collins Rugby Club on Sunday, August 24 at Greenbriar Park in Fort Collins, 90 – 6. The abbreviated 2nd side match also went to the Barbarians 26 – 5.
A-Side: Barbarians 90 – Fort Collins 6.
Wing/Fullback Asham Bell returned to the Barbarian fold after sitting out the Spring season and made quite an impression in scoring 4 tries. The Barbarians scored 14 tries and ten conversions while dominating set piece, the tackle, and possession throughout the day.
The Barbarians started two recent college graduates: Luis Lucas, Columbia and Tuck Carruthers, Colorado College. New recruits Dylan Barrett, Joe Ensminger, and Tim Miller also got runs in the second match. Former Barbarian Super League player Justin Clark laced up the boots for the first time in about a year and provided power in the engine room.
Newly appointed Division 2 Head Coach Guy Mumford was presented his first victory and was satisfied with the Barbarians’ performance. “The team’s effort was good and the players stuck to the game plan, when they could have been enticed to play individually after the game got out of hand. We won a lot of ball and attacked aggressively, but the team and I were disappointed with the number of turnovers and handling errors. We will need to focus on that aspect leading to our match this weekend against Denver Harlequins.”
